- Maurice Drummond, the first Thane of Lennox, was descended from the nobility of the Kingdom of Hungary.Edward the Confessor, who had fled to Normandy for safety, was called home to reign about 1043 when England was free from the Danish yoke of Hardy Canatus.Edward, King of England, having no children, sent for his nephew, Edward the Outlaw, and his family, who had been sent for safety to King Solomon of Hungary.Returning to England with Edward the Outlaw was Maurice, who was in charge of the ship.Edward the Outlaw died in 1067, and upon the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066, the English throne belonged to Edgar Athelin, son of Edward the Outlaw.Edgar, fearful of his safety at the hands of William the Conqueror at the time of the Conquest, set sail back to Hungary with his mother, Agatha, and sisters, Margaret and Christiana.The ship was again under the command of Maurice.Caught in a storm off the coast of Scotland, they took refuge at the Firth of Forth.Here they remained, and eventually Malcolm III, the King of Scotland, married Edgar's sister, Margaret in 1067.Maurice, highly esteemed by Queen Margaret for his faithful service and skillful conduct of the ship, was honored with lands, offices a coast of Arms and was given the name DRUMMOND."For DROMONT or DROMOND was the name of a ship of a swift course, and the captain thereof was called Dromont or Drommoner".Maurice Drummond was naturalized a Scot, but records are lacking as to whom he married.Maurice left two sons, Malcolm (after his master and King), who became the second Thane of Lennox, and Maurice.From this Hungarian nobleman lineally descended all the families of Drummond.Maurice, the father, died on the field of battle at Alnich in 1093 with King Malcolm III and Prince Edward.
